Courageous Rail Employee Suffers Critical Injuries During Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Train

A valiant railway employee who stepped in to save travelers during a mass knife incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Terrifying Event

Surveillance video reportedly shows the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from hospital.

A witness filmed the individual brandishing a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was allegedly heard yelling, "End my life, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained officers,” stated a senior law enforcement official.

Union Reaction and Calls for Measures

Rail unions were swift to commend employees and call for more measures. One union official said he would be “requesting urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest available support, tools and effective protocols in place”.

Another association representative urged the rail company and authorities “to move quickly to examine security, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.

Operator Commended for Rapid Thinking

The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to reach, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” explained a association representative.

Additional Details

Police said they got the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness described initially thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but soon understood from individuals' expressions that it was real.

Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the public to provide with any further information.

Train services on the affected line are anticipated to experience delays until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where feasible.

Individuals with information that could assist the inquiry are encouraged to reach authorities by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
